Bringing Mindset, Brain Science, and Creativity to Mathematics Teaching and Learning
The research of Stanford’s Carol Dweck, Ph.D. (FAN ’11 and ’14) has demonstrated that student and teacher “mindsets” have a profound impact on learning. Students with a “growth mindset” who believe that intelligence and “smartness” can be learned and that the brain can grow from exercise learn more effectively, displaying a desire for challenge and showing resilience in the face of failure. Such behaviors encourage greater math persistence, engagement and high achievement. In this presentation, Jo Boaler, Ph.D., a collaborator of Dr. Dweck’s, will consider how students’ mathematics pathways can change dramatically, leading to higher achievement and enjoyment. New science of the brain is revealing critical information for mathematics teachers, learners, and parents, and Dr. Boaler will consider the ways it may help to promote equity in mathematics classrooms and homes. She will explore what it means to learn mathematics with creativity and enjoyment.
